Today Zoe and I were in the supermercato buying some hairspray. We were standing in line at the register and the lady in front of us turns around and says "Chiuso". I had never heard this word before, but like I ususally do I just smiled and nodded and politely said "Si!" and we kept sanding there. She again said "Chiuso!" and again we stood there and "mmhmned" her. Finally as we continued to stay put she said "You don't understand?" in broken English, "This line is closed."
And so went our first embarrassing misunderstanding.
